The Mumbai Dabbawalas
The world renowned Dabbawalas from Mumbai are in Kolkata for the first time, as Guest Lecturer for the third Scintillations.
Simple, barely literate, bare-footed men, delivering food to lakhs of people everyday. Cycle, train, walking, using whatever they can, in the harshest of weathers, they travel from one corner of the city to other just so that somebody, working in their cosy office can get their food in time. Uncannily, they have never goofed up, as the report goes.
Over a century old system, so succesful, that it has been modeled in numerous places. From their humble beginnings with just a 100 men, they have come so far now to have a SMS service for placing orders and their very own website. Perfect example (maybe not literally), of the cliche, "rags to riches", and all due to some exceptional entreprenuerial skills and a business model that has stood the test of time.
The organisation is growing year after year.The Dabbawalas were invited to the wedding of Prince Charles on 2005, 7 years later they have been invited by BESU to Kolkata.
